ATLAS OF STUDENT MOBILITY

Dr. Todd M. Davis

The Institute of International Education (IIE) has published a groundbreaking new "Atlas of Student Mobility" to examine where the nearly 2 million students who are currently seeking education outside of their home countries come from, and where they go to obtain a trans-national higher education. With Ford Foundation support, IIE has built a system for collecting, organizing and disseminating a minimum basic data set on internationally mobile students worldwide. The Institute is working closely with its partners, the British Council and IDP Education Australia, and others to create a global focus on international student mobility. Currently, national level planners tend to be bounded in their planning by national borders, ignoring the fact that students do have choices between various host countries around the globe, and increasingly also within their own region. By creating a shared image of international mobility, we hope to highlight the truly globe-spanning aspects of higher education, make apparent the emerging world higher education economy, and establish a conversation space for those concerned with global education mobility issues. Complete with full color spreads containing maps, flags, pie charts and comprehensive data graphics, the 104- page volume provides a unique and thought-provoking view of international education trends and patterns worldwide.

The Atlas of Student Mobility contains:

National flow data for 21 leading global destination countries for international students, including:
  • Text panels placing the countries' international student populations in context
  • Tables of leading places of origin for international students
  • The worldview of international mobility from the perspective of the host country
Data tables on the 75 most important places of origin for internationally mobile students, including:

  • Leading destination countries, plus percent studying in EU and in English-speaking countries
  • Details of the higher education systems and total number of nationals seeking education abroad
  • The national, historical and cultural context for each country
